Oakton Upends PSC on “Sophomore Night”

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- Despite a 23-point showing from sophomore guard Jayonna Smith (Marshall H.S.), the Prairie State women's basketball team was unable to knock off Illinois Skyway Conference foe Oakton Tuesday night.
 
The Owls downed the Pioneers 75-62 at the PSC Fieldhouse.
 
With the setback, PSC saw its overall record drop to 19-8 with a 6-3 mark in league play.
 
Tuesday night's contest was "Sophomore Night" as PSC honored its four sophomore players as guard Smith, guard Mariana Serratos (Crown Point H.S.), forward Rocio Perez de Guzman Basili (IES El Majuelo H.S., SPAIN) and forward Sam Campbell (Villa Grove H.S.) were all recognized at the conclusion of the tilt. 
 
Smith's game-high 23 came via a 9-of-18 shooting effort from the floor.  She also hauled down 11 rebounds and handed out a trio of assists.
 
Ford delivered a 13-point showing and was named the NJCAA National Player of the Week, after averaging 29 points and 13.5 rebounds over the course of her last three games. 
 
Perez de Guzman Basili also chipped in a 13-point effort, which included three rebounds and three steals.
 
The Pioneers got off to a fast start, winning the opening tip and scoring a quick bucket thanks to a Perez de Guzman Basili layup before engaging in a back and forth opening 10 minutes which saw PSC hold a 16-15 edge after one quarter.
 
That momentum didn't last unfortunately as the Owls produced a 22-9 second stanza and led 37-25 at the break.  The game-altering swing came to fruition following a 13-3 Oakton run during that period.
 
The Pioneers will see action next on Thursday when they travel to Sugar Grove for a road date against Skyway counterpart Waubonsee (5:15 p.m.).
