Pioneers Fall to McHenry in Four Sets

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- As the traditional "cream of the crop" in the Illinois Skyway Conference, for many a year, McHenry County College has had the Prairie State volleyball team's number.

And while technically the Scots still do, the Pioneers have begun to chip away at the McHenry armor.

The chipping away began Thursday night as PSC took a set from the Scott's for the first time in 14 years.

Ultimately, the Pioneers fell to the perennial conference powerhouse 3-1, by scores of 16-25, 25-23, 15-25, 15-25 at the PSC Fieldhouse.

With the setback, PSC saw its season record dip to 3-10 overall and 1-4 in league play.

The Pioneers hung tough in the first set, tying the tilt at 4-all following a kill from freshman libero Michelle Restelli (Instituto de Ciencias H.S., MEXICO) but never held a lead in the game.

Game 2 followed the script of so many sets for PSC this campaign as both squads exchanged leads throughout.

Back to back kills late from freshman outside hitter Vitoria Pinho (Metodo Ensino Dirigido H.S., BRAZIL) and fellow freshman outside Isabelle Flores (AIU H.S., ECUADOR) pulled PSC to within a point at 22-21.

A Pinho kill gave PSC a 24-23 edge before a McHenry hitting error handed the Pioneers the set.

A Restelli ace and two kills from sophomore outside hitter Kaylin Buczkowski (Illiana Christian H.S.) cut the McHenry lead to 14-8 in Game 3.  PSC eventually came within 17-14, but were unable to stave off a seven-point McHenry run which effectively sealed away the set.

Trailing 3-0 in the third game, the Pioneers got on the board courtesy of a kill from sophomore middle Odelia Gascon (Hammond Central H.S.).

A Pinho kill cut McHenry's advantage to 10-8, but the closet the Pioneers would come from their on out was 18-12 late thanks to a Buczkowski bullet.

The Pioneers will see action next this weekend when they travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the Kirkwood Quad Tournament.
