Pioneers Lock Down Ninth Region Title in Program History, Earn Berth in National Tournament

PARK FOREST, Ill. --- To say that the Prairie State men's tennis team turned in a dominant effort would be an understatement and a massive one at that.

The Pioneers secured their ninth NJCAA Region 4 championship in program history and third consecutive following a two-day explosion of tennis excellence.

PSC swept every singles and doubles title en route to a 27-point output.  Lake County was second with 15 points and McHenry third with seven.

The Pioneers now move onto the NJCAA National Tournament

Leading the charge for the Pioneers was freshman number one singles player Andres Riveros (Unidad Educativa Comoruco H.S., VENEZUELA), who ran the table to the championship at first singles courtesy of a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Dwayne Daarol of Lake County.

Riveros, who was undefeated in region play, was named the Region 4 Player of the Year.    He and fellow freshman Sandro Giangregorio (Miguel De Cervantes H.S., Venezuela) also claimed the top doubles title with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Lake County's top tandem.

Freshman Yoog Gundani (Mansfield State H.S., AUSTRALIA) claimed the championship at No. 2 courtesy of a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Sean Meyer of Oakton.

Gundani was also part of PSC's No. 2 doubles team which won its flight championship.  Gundani's partner in that endeavor was freshman Ben Lawrie (Cabra Dominican College, AUSTRALIA).

PSC's number three singles player, Tendai Chihowa (Princeton Institute, ZIMBABWE) triumphed over Seth Lampkin of Lake County 7-5, 6-1 before teaming up with freshman Henry Torres (Liceo Moderno Campestre H.S., COLUMBIA) to upend McHenry's third team of Zack Vesquez and Ben Lagerhausen 6-2, 6-3.

Giangregorio also bested Samuel Penna of Elgin 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles before Lawrie was victorious at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0 over Alan Sifuentes of Illinois Valley 6-1, 6-0.

"In terms of conference and regional play, once again we had a perfect season," PSC head coach Donn Gobbie said. "We beat every conference and region team 9-0 and we swept through every singles and double flight at the regional tournament without dropping a set.  Success is the results of commitment and work.  Players on this team compete in summer tournaments, we practice and play team matches in the fall and winter, in addition to the traditional spring season.  That's what a serious program does."
