Pioneers Take Olive-Harvey to Four Sets, Fall in the End

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- The Prairie State volleyball team put forth its typical strong effort Tuesday evening, but it wasn't enough as NJCAA Region 4 counterpart Olive-Harvey upended the Pioneers in four sets.

PSC dropped the match by final counts of 12-25, 25-13, 25-20 and 25-20 at the PSC Fieldhouse.

As was the case with Monday's setback against Blackhawk Tech, all of Tuesday's sets were extremely competitive.

The loss dropped the Pioneers' record to 1-7.

Trailing 14-1 in Game 1, the Pioneers fought back to within 20-12 but could never pull any further.

The Pioneers raced out to a 3-0 lead in Game 2 as consecutive kills by freshman outside hitter Vitoria Pinho (Metedo Ensino Dirigido H.S., BRAZIL) made it a 10-5 game.

An ace from freshman middle hitter Nicole Holguin (La Unidad Educativa Particular Billingue Santo Domingo de Guzman H.S, ECUADOR) and another blistering kill by Pinho made it 16-6.

Pinho, following an ace by sophomore setter Samantha DeLaurentis (St. Laurence H.S.), Pinho blasted a rocket through a pair of blockers to put down another kill and make it a 21-11 game as Prairie State never looked back.

The match's third set was a back and fourth battle throughout with PSC owning a 6-5 lead early following kills from sophomore middle Odelia Gascon (Hammond Central H.S.), coupled with a block and kill from freshman outside hitter Isabelle Flores (AIU H.S., ECUADOR).

The Pioneers trailed by one to two points through much of the remainder of the set before finally falling behind 24-19.

Game 4 followed much of the same pattern as the third set with PSC trailing by small margins throughout.

A block and point from Pinho made it a 24-20 game before the Panthers put the match away.

PSC will see action next on Wednesday when they square off against Illinois Skyway Conference counterpart and undefeated Morton at the PSC Fieldhouse (6 p.m.).
