CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL - Prairie State College has had a mighty impressive soccer season thus far.
The No. 4 ranked Pioneers were rewarded with a slew of regular season awards. Coach
Carlos Reyes was named Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year as the Pioneers were outright Skyway Conference champions boasting an 8-0-1 season record.
It's the second consecutive season the Pioneers have had a share of the Skyway title.
It couldn't have been possible without outstanding effort from some of the Prairie State players. Returning All-American
Antonio Leal led the charge again with 15 goals and six assists for 36 points. Leal is third in NJCAA Division II in goals and points. His incredible season has earned him First Team All-Skyway and First Team All-Region honors along with another All-American nomination.
It wasn't all Leal, however. It was a total team effort for the Pioneers. Midfielders
Elian Munoz and
Irwin Pillai and defender
Henrik Markhoff joined Leal on the All-Region First Team. Munoz and Pillai were also named First Team All-Skyway. Markhoff, along with
Mohamed Elshafie and
Marc Lopez were selected Second Team All-Skyway.
Munoz was 21st in the country with eight goals and he added six assists. Pillai has been an anchor in the middle for the Pioneers while Markhoff has spearheaded one of the region's best defensive units.
Elshafie scored six goals and assisted on another seven.
While the Pioneers have earned many regular season awards, it is the Region IV Championship the team eyes now. Prairie State is two wins away from the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. Next up for the Pioneers is fourth-seeded Triton College at home on Tuesday. The match is set for a 2 P.M. kickoff.
