Umar Leads the Way as PSC Down’s Kankakee

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- Going into the playoffs with momentum is never a bad thing.

That said, the Prairie State men's soccer team knew this full well going into its match against NJCAA Region 4 counterpart Kankakee Monday afternoon.

Thanks in part to sophomores Ilyass Umar (Archbishop O'Leary H.S., CANADA) and Mateo Nabona (IFC Valence H.S., FRANCE) the Pioneers overcame the Cavaliers 2-0 at the Pioneer Sports Complex.

The win pushed PSC's overall mark to 9-7-2 overall.

After both squads fought though a physical and scoreless first half, the Pioneers finally broke though in the 68^th minute when Nabona hauled in a pass from Umar, spun and fired off a rocket which caught the back of the net.

Umar cut loose a well struck attempt, which also caught net, just eight minutes later with an unassisted tally.

The Pioneer defense stood tall throughout the match, defusing several potential Kankakee pushes with key pass breakups.

Sophomore goal keeper Goncalo Tomas (Escola Secondaria Camoes H.S., PORTUGAL) recorded his sixth shutout of the campaign courtesy of a three-save effort.

The Pioneers outshot the Cavaliers 13-6 and placed five on goal to Kankakees' three.

The Pioneers will see action next on Friday when they scrimmage Bethel University in Mishawaka, Indiana (5 p.m.). Postseason play begins November 1.
