Pioneers Take Down Olivet Nazarene JV

PARK FOREST, Ill. --- The Prairie State men's tennis team got itself back on track Saturday with another triumph over a four-year opponent, downing the Olivet Nazarene University JV, 5-2 at the Park Forest Tennis Club.
 
The win bumped the Pioneers' overall record to 2-3.
 
PSC claimed three matches on the singles side and two more in doubles competition.
 
Sophomore Abhinav Acharya (Kasiga School, India) claimed victory at first singles, winning his match 6-0, 6-1 while freshman Sachin Vanaraja won his bout at No. 2 6-1, 6-1.
 
Freshman Carlos Alcala was also victorious at third singles, 6-4.
 
PSC's top doubles tandem of Acharya and Alcala won 6-4, 6-2 while the No. 2 team of Vanaraja and freshman Nick Scroppo won 6-2, 6-1.
 
PSC head coach Donn Gobbie was pleased with what he saw overall in the match.
 
"Our team is coming together nicely and I think we're in a good spot right now," Gobbie said.  "Hopefully we can peak at the right time of our season."
 
He was also pleased with Alcala's play, particularly in his singles match.
 
"Carlos played outstanding," Gobbie said.  "He endured several long, physical baseline rallies and came out on top in a very tough match."
 
The Pioneers will hit the courts next on March 5 as they take on NJCAA Region IV foe DuPage at home.
