Pioneers Shut Out Illinois Valley

PARK FOREST, Ill. --- The Prairie State men's tennis team scored a shutout Sunday, downing NJCAA Region 4 opponent Illinois Valley 9-0 at the Park Forest Tennis and Racquet Club.

In singles competition, sophomore Nick Velders knocked off his opponent at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-0 before sophomore Carlos Adrian Alcala won at No. 2 6-0, 6-2.

Freshman David Voinea was victorious at No. 3, 6-0, 6-1 as sophomore Sachin Vanaraja earned a win at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Marko Djukic won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 and sophomore Carlos Armando Alcala won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.

On the doubles side, Velders and Adrian Alcala won at first doubles, 8-2 as the tandem of Voinea and Armando Alcala triumphed at No. 2, 6-0, 6-2.

Vanaraja and Djukic also won at No. 3 8-1.

Not surprisingly, PSC head coach Donn Gobbie was more than happy with what he saw.

"I am especially pleased with David Voinea's results," Gobbie said. "He is the newest member of our team and has been improving every match."

Final Result: Prairie State College 9, Illinois Valley 0
