Lake County Roars Back to Clip Pioneers at Home

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- What appeared to be a layup of a win for the Prairie State men's basketball team (pun intended) turned out to be a heartbreaking setback Tuesday night.

The Pioneers, in their 2025 Illinois Skyway Conference opener, squandered a 20-point halftime lead, falling 65-64 to Lake County at the PSC Fieldhouse.

The devastating outcome dropped PSC to 5-11 overall and 0-1 in Skyway action.

PSC was once again without the services of sophomore forward Antonio Phillips (Crete-Monee H.S.) who has missed the last two contests due to a lower body injury.

The two halves of Tuesday's tilt couldn't have been more polar opposite.

The Pioneers raced out to a 20-5 advantage during the game's first 15 minutes.

PSC led 36-16 at the break.

A 49-point second-half offensive explosion ultimately did the Pioneers in.

PSC owned its last lead of the tilt when a free throw by sophomore guard Daniel Mordi (Richards H.S.) a 55-54 edge.

Trailing 60-57 with 3:31 to go, sophomore guard Wade Sims (Thornridge H.S.) downed a three-pointer to knot the score at 60-all.

Down 65-64 with 20 seconds left, the Pioneers had opportunity to close out the contest when a last second putback attempt didn't go down.

Despite the setback, PSC did have several players turn in strong efforts, led by sophomore guard Anthony Vaval's 21-point, 10-rebound outing.

Sims tallied 18 points while dishing out six assists.

Mordi tallied 17 points and hauled down five rebounds.

The Pioneers will see action next on Thursday when they travel to Des Plaines for a road date with league counterpart Oakton (5:15 p.m. tipoff).
