Pioneers Fall to Lake County in Conference Opener

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- Despite its typical all-out effort, the Prairie State women's basketball team was unable to upend Illinois Skyway Conference counterpart Lake County Tuesday night, falling to the Lancers 78-39 at the PSC Fieldhouse.

The contest was the league opener for both squads.

With the setback, the Pioneers dropped to 9-5 overall on the campaign and 0-1 in conference action.

The Pioneers, down multiple players due to illness, were never able to jumpstart their offense, falling behind 25-12 after one quarter and 43-19 at the break.

PSC was paced in the scorer's column by sophomore guard Jayonna Smith's double-double effort of 13 points and 11 rebounds.  She also blocked a pair of shots and made off with three steals.

Freshman forward Aleah Emers (Centennial H.S.) narrowly missed a double-double, tallying 10 points while pulling down eight rebounds.

The Pioneers will see action next on Thursday when they travel to Des Plaines for a road date against Skyway opponent Oakton (tipoff 5:15 p.m.).
