Brown, Sulaiman Lead the Charge as PSC Dispatches Governors State

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- Looking to build upon its convincing win over Southwest Michigan Wednesday night, the Prairie State men's basketball team was eager to hit the floor Saturday against Governors State.
 
It was pretty obvious why.
 
Led by double-doubles from sophomore forward Victor Brown (Rich Township H.S.) and freshman guard Xavier Sulaiman (Oak Lawn H.S.), the Pioneers rolled past the Jaguars, 81-69 at the PSC Fieldhouse.
 
The win pushed PSC's record to 2-1 overall.
 
Brown recorded his third double-double of the slate, pacing the Pioneers with 22 points while sharing game-high rebounding honors with Sulaiman (12).  The 6-foot-8 Brown shot 9-of-17 from the floor with a perfect 4-of-4 effort from the free-throw line.  He also brought the crowd to its feet with a thunderous second-half, two-handed flush.
 
Sulaiman tallied 18 points for his second double-double.  The 6-foot-3 shooting guard shot 7-of-16 from the field and 2-of-5 from three-point land.  He also downed both of his free-throw attempts and contributed his own crowd-inspiring one-hand power dunk over a Jaguar defender.
 
Two other Pioneers reached twin digits in the scorer's column as freshman guard Darien Green (Christ the King College Prep) tallied 16 points and freshman point guard Javery Johnson (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) added another 10.
 
The game wasn't exactly the cake walk that the final box score indicated as both teams were engaged in a see-saw battle throughout the opening half.  PSC went to the locker room clinging to a one-point lead.
 
Saturday's tilt witnessed five lead changes and six ties. 
 
The Pioneers and Jaguars both enjoyed 14-1 and 12-2, first-half runs respectively. 
 
PSC established its largest lead at 77-57 with 3:40 to go following a Brown free-throw.
 
The Pioneers will see action next on Tuesday when they face St. Clair County Community College at the Fieldhouse (4 p.m.).
