Pioneers Pull to .500 in Skyway Following Well-Balanced Effort on Sophomore Night

PSC’s Phillips Creeps Closer to 1,000 Point Milestone

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- In what has been a see-saw of a season for the Prairie State men's basketball team, the Pioneers are hitting their stride at precisely the right time.

Following a well-balanced effort in a 74-60 Illinois Skyway Conference triumph Tuesday night at the PSC Fieldhouse, the Pioneers are now winners of four out of their last five league tilts.

The win pulled head coach Mike Manderino's team to the .500 mark in Skyway action and 11-17 overall.

Tuesday also marked the Pioneers' last regular season home game and was designated as "Sophomore Night" with PSC honoring its 10 sophomores in guard Anthony Vaval (Gwendolyn Brooks H.S.), forward Antonio Phillips, (Crete-Monee-H.S.), forward Dante Sellers (Lakeview H.S.), guard Wade Sims (Thornridge H.S.), guard Chakaris London (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.), forward Elijah Ball (Thornwood H.S.), guard Daniel Mordi (Richards H.S.), forward Mike Scanlan (Lincoln-Way East H.S.), forward Joe Sheeran (Tyne Met College, ENGLAND) and forward Brandon Landfair (Hinsdale South H.S.).

Thanks in part to his 11th double-double of the slate, Phillips continued his march toward becoming the fourth Pioneer in program history to score 1,000 points in a PSC uniform, following a 12-point, 12-rebound effort.

For Phillips, who has grinded his way to an outstanding campaign despite gutting out a series of lower body injuries, Tuesday's performance marked the 21st time this season that he had scored in double figures.

Phillips has registered 987 points in his two-year journey at PSC. Tuesday night he passed former Pioneer great Joe Hughes for fourth on the program's all-time scoring chart.

The Pioneers were led in the scorer's column by Vaval who set the tone for PSC courtesy of a 19-point showing on 8-of-21 shooting from the field which included three 3-pointers.  Vaval also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out a quartet of assists.

Another Pioneer who has already gained admission to the Thousand-Point Club, Sims helped set the pace for PSC courtesy of a 16-point attack following a 7-of-19 showing from the field. Sims also pulled down six rebounds.

Sophomore forward Daniel Mordi (Richards H.S.) also turned in a strong showing, notching 13 points.

In a game which witnessed only two lead changes, the Pioneers took a 38-32 advantage into halftime.  The Pioneers longest run of the contest was a 14-3 second half scoring spurt.

PSC's largest lead came at 60-42 with 8:43 to play following a Vaval jump shot.

The Pioneers will see action next on Thursday when they travel to Waubonsee for a road date with the Chiefs (7:15 p.m.).
