Pioneers Kick Off Spring Trip With a Sweep

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. ----  The Prairie State softball team turned in an impressive start to its annual spring trip Monday.
 
The Pioneers bumped their season record to 4-2 after downing NJCAA Division III No. 6 Community College of Rhode Island and the University of Southern California Sumter.
 
PSC took down Rhode Island by a 5-3 final count and USC Sumter 9-1.
 
The Pioneers pounded out 20 hits in the two combined tilts.
 
Rhode Island was kept off balance by a dominating performance from the circle by freshman pitcher Natalie Kozub (Kouts H.S.), who went the distance, surrendering three runs (2 earned) on three hits.  She walked walked four and struck out five.
 
Leading the way at the plate against Rhode Island was freshman second baseman Malailyn Stout-Dukes (Crete-Monee H.S.) who swung her way to a 3-for-4 showing which included a pair of runs and trio of stolen bases.
 
Sophomore right fielder Armani Ruiz (Hammond H.S.) went 2-for-2 with a run, RBI and walk while freshman left fielder Addison Richmond (Kankakee Valley H.S.) went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
 
Kozub was the star of the USC game on both sides of the ball, recording another complete game from the circle while aiding her own cause at the dish with a 3-for-4, two-run effort which included an RBI.
 
Kozub also allowed six scattered hits with a run, walk and three strikeouts in six innings of work.
 
Richmond drove in another pair against USC, in a 1-for-2 performance.
 
Sophomore first baseman Audrey Schau (Hackett Catholic H.S.) went 2-for-4 with a triple, RBI and two runs.  Stout-Dukes also went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.
