Kozub, Schau Help PSC Down Joliet on Road

JOLIET, Ill. --- Thanks to a lack of cooperation on the part of Mother Nature, it had been quite some time since the Prairie State softball team took the field.

Thankfully, the long layoff did little to halt the Pioneers' post spring trip momentum as head coach Frank Wilkins' team swept a doubleheader from NJCAA Region 4 counterpart Joliet Wednesday afternoon.

The Pioneers took both contests by final tallies of 5-3 and 10-9.

The wins pushed PSC over the .500 mark to 7-6 overall.

The Pioneers received another strong two-way effort from freshman pitcher Natalie Kozub (Kouts H.S.).  Kozub went the distance in the circle, firing seven innings while allowing three runs on nine hits.  She also walked three and struck out three.

Kozub aided her own cause at the plate as well, delivering a 2-for-3, three-RBI afternoon which included both a two-run home run and RBI double.

Kozub's two-run shot to center opened the scoring for PSC in the first frame.

Sophomore first baseman Audrey Schau (Hackett Catholic H.S.) went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

Sophomore shortstop Lindsey Pickering (Portage H.S.) went 1-for-1 with a walk, hit by pitch, three runs and two stolen bases.

Wilkins gave the ball to Schau for Game 2 and the sophomore worked 6 2/3 allowing just three earned runs on nine hits while walking one and fanning three.

Schau also swung her way to a 1-for-4, four-RBI outing.

In the fifth, Schau blasted a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence for a three-run homer.

Sophomore third baseman Faith Lewin (Wheeler H.S.) had a strong day as well, going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, a double, triple and a walk.

Kozub was called upon to close out the game in the seventh and picked up her first save of the campaign.

The Pioneers will see action next on Thursday in their 2025 conference and home opener against McHenry County College (first pitch 3 p.m.).
