Pioneers Move one Step Closer to Skyway Title

Program Has Now Won 15 Consecutive Skyway Conference Matches

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- The Prairie State men's tennis team took one giant step toward its third consecutive Illinois Skyway Conference championship Thursday afternoon when it downed conference foe Elgin by a final count of 9-0.
 
With the triumph, the Pioneers moved to 9-5 on the campaign and 5-0 in Skyway action.
 
PSC has whitewashed all of five of its conference opponents thus far in the season.
 
Thursday's win also marked the program's 15th consecutive conference victory and 15th straight shutout.
 
The Pioneers have not dropped a Skyway match since 2022.
 
PSC picked up a win at number one singles from freshman Andres Riveros (Unidad Educativa Comoruco H.S., VENEZUELA), 6-0, 6-0.
 
Fellow freshman Yoog Gundani (Mansfield State H.S., AUSTRALIA) triumphed at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0 prior to freshman Tendai Chihowa (Princeton Institute, ZIMBABWE) winning his skirmish at No. 3 6-0, 6-0.
 
Freshman Sandro Giangregorio (Miguel De Cervantes H.S., VENEZUELA) also won 6-0, 6-0 as did freshman Ben Lawrie (Cabra Dominican College, AUSTRALIA), 6-1, 6-1.
 
Freshman Henry Torres (Liceo Moderno Campestre H.S., COLUMBIA) closed out singles play, winning his match at No.6 6-1, 6-0.
 
On the doubles side, PSC's top tandem of Riveros and Giangregorio triumphed 8-0 before the No. 2 duo of Lawrie and Gundani were victorious 8-4.  Torres and Chihowa won their battle at No. 3 8-2.
 
 
The Pioneers can lock down the league crown on Tuesday when they square off against Lake County in Grayslake (2:45 p.m.).
