Women’s Soccer Preps for Return Trip to Postseason

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- Coming off of a campaign in which it qualified for the NJCAA Region 4 Tournament for the first time in history, the Prairie State women's soccer team is primed and ready to make another run at postseason glory.

The Pioneers, who open the 2025 season this coming Saturday (August 23) against Black Hawk College at the Pioneer Sports Complex posted an overall record of 7-7-2 in 2024.

While on the surface, that record may not appear to be overly impressive, but considering the program's history and the manner in which the 2024 Pioneers reached the playoffs, it most certainly is.

PSC locked down its playoff berth after going 3-0-1 down the stretch.  All four matches witnessed the Pioneers not allow a goal.  The three wins came consecutively as head coach Carlos Reyes' team scored a trio of shutouts, blanking Harper 3-0, Daley 5-0 and Truman 6-0 before battling Moraine Valley to a scoreless draw.

Reyes' squad will have to find new offensive punch since the squad's top three goal scorers have graduated or moved onto four-year institutions.

Top scorer Jane Pinkerton and her 10 markers will be tough to replace as Pinkerton will now join Reyes' staff as an assistant.

Vacated sophomores Natalia Guerra and Karla Ruiz each notched six goals and five assists a year ago.

The team's top returning offensive force will be Shamiah Stinchcombe-Brown (York Memorial Collegiate Institute, CANADA).  Stinchcombe-Brown stretched the net three times in 2024.  She also dished out a pair of assists.

Sophomore Thato Khomari (Lyttleton Manor H.S., SOUTH AFRICA) will help provide veteran leadership as will fellow sophomores Abigail Fernandez (Beecher H.S.), Alondra Estrada (Bloom H.S.), Tiara Alvarado (Bloom H.S.) and Keyla Avila (Bloom H.S.).

Sophomore goalkeeper Lily Sanchez (Argo H.S.) is back to guard the area between the posts and is looking to build upon a strong freshman campaign where she made 27 saves in 765 minutes of action.

Sanchez recorded a career-high five stops in three matches on the year (Oakton, Rock Valley, Morton).

"After making the playoffs for the first time last year, we're looking to accomplish even bigger things in 2025," Reyes said.  "Having said that, getting back to the playoffs and advancing beyond where we did last year is going to take a tremendous amount of hard work.  We have some very strong programs in both the region and conference and we will of course have to be at our best to get past them.

"Overall, I like our group and I'm excited to see what we do."

In addition to the team's plethora of second-year players, the 2025 Pioneers also feature eight freshmen.

First-year Pioneers Priscilla Blemano (Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School, CANADA), Layla Condee (Rich Township H.S.), Jessica Enriquez (Thornridge H.S.), Natalie Ibarra (Bloom H.S.), Mia Ortiz (North Grand H.S.), Anna Romero (Bloom H.S.), Maggie Stachowicz (Tinley Park H.S.) and Rachal Wimberly (Rich Township H.S.) will all be looked at to make strong contributions.

Saturday's season-opener is set for a noon kickoff.
