Pioneers Fall on Opening Weekend to Pair of Top- Five Squads

WESTFIELD, Ind. --- As has been the case in recent years, the nationally-renowned Prairie State men's soccer program's early-season schedule is nothing to be taken lightly.
 
Squaring off against the No. 5 and No. 3 ranked teams in the NJCAA Division II this past weekend, the 16th-ranked Pioneers received an early-season dose of high-leverage competition. 
 
Unfortunately PSC, despite two strong efforts, was unable to garner a win.
 
Prairie State (0-2) fell to fifth-ranked Baltimore Essex 1-0 on Saturday before being clipped 2-0 by No. 3 Iowa Lakes on Sunday.
 
In the season lid-lifter, Prairie State outshot Essex 10-5 with each team registering a shot on goal.
 
Sophomore  forward Ilyass Umar (Archbishop O'Leary H.S., CANADA) recorded PSC's lone shot on goal in the opener.  Umar was denied in the 43rd minute despite a well-struck shot which was stopped by Essex keeper Jacob Pearce.
 
Essex scored in the 54th minute.
 
Against Iowa Lakes, the Pioneer defense was put to the test from the get-go as the nation's third-ranked squad peppered PSC to the tune of 18 total shots with 10 on goal.
 
Iowa Lakes recorded tallies in both halves.
 
PSC sophomore goalkeeper Goncalo Tomas (Escola Secundaria Camoes H.S. , PORTUGAL) turned away eight of the 10 shots he faced  
 
On the offensive side, PSC placed three balls on target with sophomore forward Mateo Nabona (IFC Valence H.S., FRANCE) putting a pair on the frame.
 
Sphomore forward Jim Boulanger (Lycee Alfred Kastler H.S, FRANCE) recorded the other shot on goal for the Pioneers.

PSC will see action next on Tuesday when they travel to Crystal Lake for a road battle against Illinois Skyway Conference counterpart McHenry (4 p.m.).
