Instant Classic: Quartet of Double-Digit Scorers Help Take Down Moraine

Pioneers Edge Cyclones in Dramatic, Down-to-the-Wire Finish

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- With postseason play looming large on the horizon, there truly could be no better tune up for the Prairie State men's basketball team than taking on its fiercest rival.

As always, the hardwood battle between Moraine Valley and the Pioneers proved to be playoff caliber.

Fueled by a well-balanced attack, the Pioneers delivered their biggest home-court win of the campaign, taking the Cyclones down to the wire courtesy of an 82-81 victory at the PSC Fieldhouse.

The triumph pushed the Pioneers' record to 12-16 overall with a 5-7 showing in Illinois Skyway Conference action.

Having already secured a post season berth, the Pioneers will cap off their regular season on Thursday night at home as forward Victor Brown (Rich Township H.S.) is honored on "Sophomore Night."

Prairie State was paced by freshman forward Darien Green (Christ the King College Prep) and his 21-point outing.  The 6-foot-4 Green shot 8-of-12 from the field.

Freshman guard Xavier Sulaiman (Oak Lawn H.S.)   recorded 14 points and tore down seven rebounds.

Brown added 12 tallies with seven rebounds. He also made off with a pair of steals.

Freshman forward Dwayne Flowers (Chi Prep) chipped in 10 points while freshman forward Ryan Clemons (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) led PSC with 10 rebounds.

In a game which see-sawed back and forth form the opening tip, witnessing 12 lead changes and eight ties, PSC saw itself on the top side of a 41-37 score at the break.

The Cyclones established a 58-52 advantage with 12:05 to play.

A pair of Brown free throws tied the contest at 68 with 4:25 to play.

PSC took a 72-68 lead courtesy of a four-point play by Flowers, who was fouled on a converted three-point attempt.

Moraine Valley grabbed a one-point at 81-80 with five seconds left.

Almost immediately after the ensuing inbound pass, Green was fouled, sending him to the free-throw line with a chance to win the game.

Green sunk both opportunities as Moraine was unable to knock down a well-defended, last-ditch three-point attempt as time expired.
