Borges’ Walk-Off Bomb Sets the Tone for Twin Bill Sweep

HAMMOND, Ind. --- To say that Prairie State sophomore shortstop Nuno Borges (Colegio CK, BRAZIL) "won" his at-bat in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday afternoon would be an understatement and a colossal one at that.

After enduring an epic 10-pitch battle, which saw him foul off five straight offerings, Borges dropped the barrel on a 3-2, elevated fastball and deposited it over the right field fence for a dramatic solo, walk-off home run at Dowling Park.

Borges' bomb broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the Pioneers to a 3-2 victory over NJCAA Region 4 counterpart Kishwaukee.

PSC claimed the nightcap as well by way of a 5-1 final.

The doubleheader sweep pushed the Pioneers' record to 5-7 overall.

The Pioneers tied the opener at 2 in the bottom of the sixth when freshman centerfielder Ian Bando (Colegio Country Kids, BRAZIL) drove home sophomore catcher Juan Pinuelas (Goliath Academy, MEXICO) on an infield error.

Borges' blast also made a winner of tough-luck freshman starting pitcher Alex Kvasnicka (Marian Catholic H.S.).  The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Kvasnicka went the distance, allowing two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out eight.  The victory was the season's first for Kvasnicka, who has thrown well in every appearance for PSC in 2026 but had yet to secure a win.

PSC scratched out eight hits in Game 1.

Freshman Lucas Oshikawa (Colegio Country Kids, BRAZIL) and Bando each recorded multiple-hit efforts.

The Pioneers recorded just four hits in the nightcap, but cashed in on its scoring opportunities to a greater degree than in Game 1, where they stranded ten men.

Freshman Alberto Araujo (Schoolhouse Prep, FLORIDA), sophomore Jesser Contreras (The Vine Christian Academy), sophomore Kyle Crabtree (Lincoln-Way East H.S.) and Bando all drove in runs in Game 2 for PSC.

Sophomore hurler Jose Chacin (J.C. Bermudez Doral H.S., FLORIDA) worked six frames to pick up the win.  Chacin allowed an unearned run on three hits.  He walked one, hit three batters and punched out nine.

The Pioneers will take to the diamond next on Saturday when they travel to Cicero for their Illinois Skyway Conference opener against the Panthers (1 p.m.).
