Ninth Place Finish at National Tournament Sends PSC Tennis Out on High Note

PLANO, TX. --- Outside of winning the whole thing, there weren't many scenarios which could have shone brighter for the Prairie State men's tennis team than the final outcome it achieved at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament.

In its final season of competition, the Pioneers posted the program's best finish ever at the national tournament, securing the ninth spot in the team's standings.

Next to men's soccer's 2022 national title, the ninth-place effort is the second-highest finish for a PSC team in any sport in school history.

Legendary PSC head coach Donn Gobbie was thrilled to see his team go out in style.

"I'm very happy to close out our program with the tennis team's best-ever finish at the national championships," Gobbie said. "I'm even happier that all of our student-athletes will be moving on to four-year schools to continue both their academic and athletic careers."

The Pioneers tallied 19.5 points and closed out the tournament on a high note with two players earning consolation championships for the first time in program history.

In all, four Pioneers competed for consolation championships with sophomore Tendai Chihowa (Princeton Institute, ZIMBABWE) battling to the end in the second singles consolation title skirmish, 6-8.

Freshman Marko Brkovic (Applewood Heights Secondary, CANADA) earned the consolation belt at third singles by way of a furious comeback, rallying from a 4-7 deficit to claim a 9-7 victory.

PSC's doubles tandem of Ben Lawrie (Cabra Dominican College, AUSTRALIA) and Fergus Larkin (Seaton H.S., AUSTRALIA) claimed the consolation title at No. 2 doubles by way of an 8-4 final score.
