Pioneers Slug Their Way to Split With DuPage

PSC Earns Walk-Off Win in Game 1

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- Freshman shortstop Fabian Romero (Olympia H.S.) fired his helmet to the ground, raised his arms in triumph and emerged from a cloud of dust to join his jubilant teammates down the first base line.
 
Romero's head-first slide following sophomore right fielder Tyler Brody's (Beecher H.S.) seventh-inning sacrifice fly gave the Prairie State baseball team a 12-11, walk-off victory over DuPage in the first game of an NJCAA Region IV doubleheader Tuesday.
 
The Pioneers dropped Game 2, 18-8.
 
With the split, PSC's record improved to 5-14.
 
Romero's scamper home to end Game 1 capped a five-run seventh.
 
PSC pounded out 12 hits in the opener with Romero leading the way, courtesy of a 3-for-3 contest.
 
Sophomore center fielder Luis Civico (J.P. McCaskey H.S.) drove in five runs courtesy of a 2-for-5, 5 RBI game, which included a towering fourth-inning three-run home run to right.
 
Sophomore designated hitter Gino Gazzillo (Mount Carmel H.S.) hammered a second inning solo home run to right center, tying the game at 1.  Gazzillo went 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.
 
Sophomore catcher Jose Avila (Celebration H.S., Venezuela) also collected two hits, an RBI and two runs.
 
PSC recorded six hits in the nightcap but was unable to overcome a 5-0 first-inning defecit.
 
Avila turned in another strong effort, cracking a pair of hits while driving in a run and scoring twice.
 
The Pioneers tentatively return to action Saturday (weather permitting) as the travel to Illinois Skyway Conference foe Elgin for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
