True Pioneer: Thomas Becomes PSC’s First Member of 1,000-Point Club in Win Over Waubonsee

Sophomore Guard Claims PSC All-Time Scoring Record

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. --- In its nearly two decades of existence, the Prairie State women's basketball program has produced one All-American and dozens of all-region players throughout its history.

None of those players had ever tallied 1,000 career points however.  Until Tuesday that is.

Sophomore guard Miracle Thomas (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) completed her quest to become both the Pioneers' all-time leading scorer and first member of the 1,000-Point Club as PSC rolled to a 72-54 win over Illinois Skyway Conference foeWaubonsee.

Thomas' 27 points pushed her past former Pioneer Shauneia McPhearson for the top spot on the program's all-time scoring list.

McPhearson, who wore the PSC uniform from 2009-11 and tallied a school record 989 points.

That mark stood for 13 seasons.

Thomas, who now has scored 1,013 points, shot 12-of-25 from the field and hauled down 11 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the slate.

The 5-foot-8 Thomas tallied point No. 1,000 midway through the second quarter on a layup courtesy of an assist by fellow sophomore Evelyn Ordonez (Reavis H.S.).

Following the contest, PSC head coach Tanner Kuehn was more than proud of his star scorer.

"It's an incredible achievement for Miracle to become the first 1,000 point scorer in program history," Kuehn said. "As great an achievement as it is, it does not come as a surprise when I have seen the work that she has put in day in and day out to continuously improve.  It's been fun to watch Miracle grow as a person and a player this season."

Of all the goals that Thomas had for herself when she first stepped on the court at PSC in 2022, tallying over 1,000 points and etching her name in school history were not high on the list.

"When I first got here, a thousand points was something I expected very little of," Thomas said.  "Once the ball got rolling (and I started playing games here) I saw my potential and that I had the potential to reach a goal like that, so I just continued to strive for it."

Thomas wasn't the only Pioneer to score in double figures either.  Sophomore guard Rachael Kapocious (Marian Catholic H.S.) also accomplished the feat, depositing 20 points (five 3-pointers) on 7-of-11 shooting from the field.

The Pioneers controlled the contest from the outset, racing out to a 24-6 first quarter advantage.

PSC led 50-21 at the break.

The Pioneers will hit the hardwood next on Thursday when they host Skyway counterpart Oakton in a 5:15 p.m. tipoff.
