Pioneers Hold Off Late Rally to Down Daley

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- With the freshman combo of guards Xavier Sulaiman (Oak Lawn H.S.) and Darien Green (Christ the King College Prep) back in the lineup, the Prairie State men's basketball team was looking to climb back above the .500 mark Tuesday night.
 
The Pioneers did just that, edging out Region 4 counterpart Daley College 68-65 at the PSC Fieldhouse.
 
The win moved the Pioneers to 4-3 on the campaign.
 
Sulaiman paced PSC in the scorer's column with an 18-point showing on 4-of-8 shooting from the field.  The 6-foot-3 Sulaiman also snared seven rebounds.
 
Attacking the basket with vengeance throughout the contest allowed Sulaiman to shoot 13 free throws.  He sunk 10 of those and the charity stripe opportunities definitely helped preserve a PSC lead down the stretch.
 
Green tallied 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor and pulled down four rebounds.  He also handed out a quartet of assists. 
 
Sophomore forward Victor Brown (Rich Township H.S.) delivered his fifth double-double of the slate when he tallied 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
 
Freshman point guard Javery Johnson (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) added nine points while distributing three assists. 
 
Freshman Dwayne Flowers (Chi Prep) contributed seven points and five rebounds.
 
After racing out to a commanding 22-point advantage at the break, the Pioneers had to buckle down hard over the final 20 minutes in order to withstand a huge Daley push which almost saw the Bulldogs steal the game away.
 
Three Sulaiman free throws and a free throw by Johnson down the stretch allowed PSC to hold on late.
 
The Pioneers will be in action next on Saturday when they face Region 4 foe Harper at the Fieldhouse (3 p.m.).
