Dapice’s Big Day Drives PSC Past Triton

Pioneers Move to 6-5 on Young Season

RIVER GROVE, Ill. --- With a strong mix of veterans and newcomers, the 2025 edition of Prairie State baseball has its sights set on beating the region's most storied programs and proving to the competition that it is a force to be reckoned with in head coach Dre Gilmore's second full season at the helm.

The Pioneers did just that on Sunday afternoon.

Fueled by a 4-for-4 effort at the plate by sophomore right fielder Anthony Dapice (Minooka H.S.), the Pioneers dropped longtime NJCAA Region 4 top tier program Triton, 10-9.

The win propelled the Pioneers to an overall record of 6-5 and came on the heels of a very successful spring trip.

The Trojans, who have produced the likes of hall of famer Kirby Puckett as well as MLB triples leader Lance Johnson represent the type of program the Pioneers are setting their sites on when it comes to historical aspirations.

"Going into this game, we knew we would have a chance to put up numbers offensively, but we never got the timely hit to open the doors," Gilmore said.  "While we had 19 hits, we also left 16 guys on base. We were still able to put up 10 runs, despite leaving all those guys on, but if we want the success to continue, we need to get back to doing the small things in order to generate more production."

Dapice's four-hit outing allowed him to score a quartet of runs. He also doubled.

Dapice wasn't the only four-hit Pioneer as freshman third baseman Luis Romero () went 4-for-5with a pair of RBI and a walk.

Freshman shortstop Nuno Borges (Colegio C.K., BRAZIL) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a double.

Freshman second baseman Jesser Contreras (The Vine Christian Academy) collected two hits and scored a run.

Sophomore Fabian Morales (Waukesha H.S.) posted the start and performed well, working six innings while allowing three runs (2 earned) on just four hits en route to the win.  Morales also walked three and struck out nine.

Freshman Pedro Pinto (Externatosaojose H.S., BRAZIL) nailed down the ninth, picking up the save.

PSC, weather permitting, will see action next on Wednesday as they take on another traditional power in Kankakee (3 p.m.).
