Pioneers Go 3-1 Over Productive Weekend, Even Record at .500

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- After a grueling spring trip, which saw it battle several high-caliber programs, many of whom had played 15 or more games already on the season, the Prairie State baseball team is beginning to find its collective stride.

A productive 3-1 weekend was proof positive of this.

Following a Saturday doubleheader split with Illinois Skyway Conference counterpart Morton, the Pioneers capped off the week with a doubleheader sweep of Kennedy-King.

PSC now sits at .500 (8-8) on the season.

Following their twin bill sweep of NJCAA Region 4 opponent Kishwaukee on Thursday the Pioneers split their Skyway Conference opener with the Panthers Saturday, defeating them 12-2 in the opener before falling 14-9 in the nightcap.

Prairie State then upended the Statesmen 10-0 and 12-0 on Sunday.

PSC picked up a pair of two-hit efforts in the Game 1 win over Morton as both freshman third baseman Lucas Oshikawa (Colegio Country Kids, BRAZIL) and freshman left fielder Isaac Velasco (Reavis H.S.) each achieved the feat.

Oshikawa went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI as Velasco went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double.

Sophomore shortstop Nuno Borges (Colegio CK, BRAZIL) belted his second home run in three days in the win.  The strong-armed shortstop would also homer in the Game 2 setback.

Velasco drove in three runs in the nightcap.

In Game 1 against the Statesmen, freshman second baseman Marcus Caradine (Munster H.S., INDIANA) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases while sophomore designated hitter Jesser Contreras (The Vine Christian Academy) went 2-for-2 with a double, run and stolen base.

Bando also collected a pair of knocks in a 2-for-3 effort.

Freshman righthander Rodrigo Arceo (T.F. South H.S.) went the distance on the throwing all five innings of Game 1 while surrendering just a trio of scattered hits.  He walked one and struck out four.

In the nightcap, Caradine had another standout effort, going 2-for-2 with a trio of both runs and stolen bases.

Sophomore outfielder Moises Vazquez (Andrean H.S., INDIANA) swung his way to a 2-for-3 showing with a trio of RBIs and run-scoring triple.

Contreras also drove in four runs in a 1-for-3 showing.

Freshman hurler Bernabe Astorga (Eisenhower H.S.) worked all five innings en route to the win, punching out four while surrendering just a pair of hits while walking none.

The Pioneers will see action next on Monday when they travel to Kankakee for a road date with the Cavaliers.
