PSC Earns Splits With McHenry and Illinois Valley

OGLESBY, Ill. --- Led by solid pitching and timely hitting, the Prairie State baseball team earned a pair of splits in recent action, taking a game from both Illinois Skyway Conference foe McHenry and NJCAA Region 4 counterpart Illinois Valley.
 
The wins pushed the Pioneers overall record to 13-19 overall and 3-3 in Skyway action.
 
Prairie State won the opener against McHenry in Crystal Lake by a 6-4 count before falling to the Scots 13-0 in the nightcap Saturday.
 
Against Illinois Valley on Monday, PSC claimed a 6-1 triumph before dropping Game 2 to the Eagles, 5-1.
 
In the McHenry opener, freshman right-hander Alex Kvasnicka (Marian Catholic H.S.) starred on the mound, going the distance en route to a complete-game effort. 
 
The 6-foot-2 Kvasnicka allowed four runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out four.
 
At the plate, sophomore first baseman Kyle Crabtree (Lincolnway-East H.S.) led the way with a 3-for-4, three-RBI showing. 
 
Shortstop Nuno Borges (Colegio C.K., BRAZIL) went 2-for-3 in an effort which included a pair of RBIs and stolen base.
 
Crabtree launched a long home run in the opener against Illinois Valley and sophomore utility man Jesser Contreras (The Vine Christian Academy, FLORIDA) also went deep.
 
Crabtree also laced a double in the game as well.  Contreras' blast was his lone hit in the contest, but plated three runs.
 
PSC pounded out 11 hits in Game 1 as freshman Lucas Oshikawa (Colegio Country Kids, BRAZIL) went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
 
Sophomore lefthander Michael Kelly (Oak Forest H.S.) earned his first win of the slate, coming out of the bullpen in relief of starter Isaac Velasco (Reavis H.S.) .  The 6-foot- 2 Kelly went 5 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on five hits while walking two and punching out four.
 
PSC mustered just five hits in Game 2.
 
The Pioneers will see action next on Tuesday when they travel to Moraine Valley for a doubleheader with the Cyclones (2 p.m.).
