Prairie State Reaches Region IV Championship but Falls to Madison

FREEPORT--- Prairie State was tough as nails this season and it was never more evident than the team's comeback in the semifinal round of the Region IV Tournament. Down by five in the fifth, the Pioneers scored six unanswered runs en route to a 7-6 victory. Unfortunately, Madison was too much for Prairie State in the championship round as the Pioneers fell 7-0 in the next game.

For the second time in as many days, Prairie State couldn't solve Madison. The Pioneers gave a valiant effort but fell 7-0 in the Region IV Championship game on Sunday.

Prairie State managed only two hits in the game one each by Juanita Carrera and McKenna Van Dommelen. Karly Kos pitched a complete game for the Pioneers.

Prairie State has made the Region IV Championship game for two consecutive years and it needed late inning heroics to make it happen.

Trailing 7-2 in the fifth inning, the offense ignited. Monica Rangel delivered a two-run double in the fifth to make the game 7-5 and then connected on a mammoth home run on a 3-0 pitch with runners on first and second with two outs in the sixth.

The home run capped off Prairie State's five-run late inning comeback. The lead was enough for Kos, who picked up the win in the circle giving up just three earned runs.

The Pioneers finished with a 27-10 record and graduate sophomores Alyssa Gill, Barbosa, Makaela Ruske, Juanita Carrera, McKenna VanDommelen, Melanie Shadley, Kos and Rangel.
