CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- On a day where Prairie State head coach Franks Wilkins and his team honored four outstanding sophomores, the Pioneers would have liked nothing more than to lock down a couple of wins against a region softball heavyweight.
Unfortunately, that just wasn't in the cards as NJCAA Region IV powerhouse Kankakee downed PSC in both ends of a double header at the Pioneer Sports and Recreation Park Wednesday.
The Cavaliers bested PSC by final scores of 5-0 and 5-3, dropping the Pioneers overall record to 5-28.
PSC was unable to muster any offensive production at all in Game 1 as Kankakee starting pitcher Katie Lorscheider tossed a perfect game in the opener, striking out 15.
The Pioneers' offense bounced back in the nightcap however as PSC pounded out eight hits.
The sophomore class represented themselves well on their big day, with shortstop
Bethany Wisz (Lake Central H.S.), leading the charge, going 3-for-4 with a run.
Sophomore catcher
Kristina Adney (Lake Central H.S.) drove in a pair of runs, courtesy of a 1-for-4 afternoon.
Sophomore second baseman
Brooke Dusseau (Wheeler H.S.) went 2-for-4 with PSC's only extra-base hit, a first-inning double.
Freshman pitcher
Mariana Serratos (Crown Point H.S.) performed well from the circle, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out four and walking three.
Serratos didn't surrender a run until the third.
The Pioneers scored all three of their runs in the home half of the fifth with the big blow of the frame coming in courtesy of a two-run single off the bat of Adney.
The Pioneers will hit the field next on Saturday when they travel to McHenry for an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference doubleheader with the Scots (noon).
