Serratos' Big Day Leads the Way

Sophomore Shortstop Collects Seven Hits, Scores Five Runs

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- Gabriela Serratos (Crown Point H.S.) certainly made the most of her final home games at the PSC Sports Complex Saturday.

Prairie State's sophomore shortstop put on a clinic on "Sophomore Day," setting the pace for a double header sweep of NJCAA Region 4 counterpart Harper.

The Pioneers (18-24) downed the Hawks by final counts of 13-5 and 10-6 in front of an enthusiastic and boisterous crowd.

Between contests, PSC head coach Frank Wilkins honored his program's six sophomores as Serratos, pitcher Jayla Matela (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.), left fielder Arinanna Mata (Lockport Township H.S.), second baseman Colby McDivitt (Herscher H.S.), catcher Grace Arnett (LaPorte H.S.) and center fielder Eliani Vega (Bloom H.S.) were all presented with framed photos and gift baskets.

Serratos turned in one of the finest days of her two year stint in Chicago Heights, collecting seven hits while scoring five runs and driving in another four.

The performance capped off a tremendous week for Serratos, who in five games went 11-for-17 (.647 batting average) with nine RBI, seven runs, three doubles, a triple and two stolen bases.

Serratos went 4-for-4 in Game 1 with four runs.

Matela also turned in a strong showing, going 3-for-3 with four RBI, raising her team-best batting average to .398.

Arnett (2-for-3, 3 RBI, run) and freshman first baseman Audrey Schau (Hackett Catholic H.S.), (2-for-4, 4 RBI) also turned in multi-hit days.

Matela earned the Game 1 win from the circle, going the distance (five innings), allowing five runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out two.

A pair of four-run outputs in each of the first two frames helped PSC establish an early lead as it never looked back.

Serratos led the way again in the nightcap, posting a 3-for-3, four-RBI effort with a run and walk.  She was the lone Pioneer to record multiple hits.

McDivitt picked up the win from the circle, allowing six runs on 12 hits while fanning eight and walking two.
