2024 NJCAA National Tournament: Day 1 Recap

PLANO, TX --- The first day of competition against the nation's best got off to a strong start for the PSC men's tennis team Monday at the NJCAA Tournament.
 
The Pioneers won five matches (three singles, two doubles) on the day, setting themselves up for good position on Day 2.
 
Prairie State's top singles threat, sophomore Nick Velders, downed Asad Okoye of Mesa College 7-5, 6-3 in opening round play.
 
Freshman David Voinea knocked off Ryan Roberson of Coastal Alabama 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 before Carlos Armando Alcala bumped Nicolas Romero of Mesa 6-1, 6-0.
 
Freshman Marko Dukic fell to Ognjen Gajic of Seward County 6-2, 6-1.
 
In doubles action, Voinea and sophomore Sachin Vanaraja's took down Triston Hill and Duarte Mestre of Mississippi Gulf Coast 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
 
Carlos Armando Alcala and Dukic upended John Frank and Hiram Havard of Mississippi Gulf Coast 6-3, 7-5 before Carlos Adrian Alcala and Velders fell to Fabian Juarez and Gabriel Masa of Hinds Community College 3-6, 4-6.
