Pioneers Battle Preseason No. 20 St. Clair County Down to the Wire

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- A ten-point halftime deficit wasn't enough to halt the competitive drive of the Prairie State men's basketball team Tuesday night in its battle against NJCAA preseason No. 20 St. Clair County.
 
Unfortunately, a furious second-half comeback didn't fully materialize as the Pioneers fell to the Skippers 93-83 at the PSC Fieldhouse.
 
The setback evened PSC's record at 2-2 overall.
 
The Pioneers were led in the scoring column once again by freshman guard Xavier Sulaiman (Oak Lawn H.S.) who poured in a team-high 25 points on 7-of-22 shooting from the field. 
 
The 6-foot-3 Sulaiman also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out five assists.
 
Freshman point guard Javery Johnson (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S) tallied 14 points while handing out a team-high six assists.
 
  Freshman guard Darien Green (Christ the King College Prep) also added 14 tallies while freshman forward Orlin Nesbitt (Beecher H.S.) added 12 points and seven rebounds.
 
The Pioneers got off to a rough start as the Skippers raced out to a 47-36 edge at halftime.
 
A Flowers three-pointer followed by a Suilaiman free throw and layup set up a Johnson layup, which cut the lead to 61-60 with 12:59 to play.
 
Unfortunately, that was as close as PSC would come to scoring the upset as the Skippers would eventually pull away.
 
The Pioneers will see action next on Saturday when they travel to Chicago for a road date against NJCAA Region 4 counterpart Kennedy-King (3 p.m.).
