Heartbreak on the Pitch: Season Comes to Close Following Semifinal Loss in PK’s

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- Every now and again a contest occurs in which it truly is a shame that one of the two teams playing had to lose.

This was precisely the sentiment following Tuesday's NJCAA Region 4 semifinal between Prairie State and Triton.

After 110 minutes of all-out, hard-fought soccer, it was the Pioneers who saw their season come to a close following a 2-1 defeat via penalty kicks at the Pioneer Sports Complex.

The season-ending setback closed PSC's campaign at 10-7-3.

If it weren't for superb goalkeeper play on both ends of the pitch, Tuesday's tilt could have been extremely lopsided in the end.

Triton keeper Adam Jedrzejczyk and PSC netminder Goncalo Tomas (Ecola Secundaria Camoes H.S., PORTUGAL) were each outstanding and made acrobatic, game-saving saves between the posts.

Tomas finished with three saves.

Triton staked claim to a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute as the Pioneers went into the intermission trailing.

PSC responded in a big way in the 60th when sophomore midfielder Edgar Perez (St. Laurence H.S.) tallied his second marker of the postseason when got loose on a breakaway and scorched a shot into the back of the net.

The Pioneers had a chance to tally the "golden goal" with ten seconds remaining in the second overtime with the ball deep inside Triton's goal box, but were unable to convert.
