Pioneers Open Conference Slate on Winning Note

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- The Prairie State men's basketball team opened Illinois Skyway Conference action in resounding fashion Tuesday night, downing league counterpart Elgin 99-86 at the PSC Fieldhouse.
 
The win elevated PSC's overall record to 7-9.
 
The Pioneers led from the opening tip and outrebounded the Spartans50-36 with 16 of those caroms coming on the offensive glass.  
 
Prairie State also held a major advantage at the free throw line, where it knocked down 19 of 26 attempts. Elgin shot just five free throws.
 
Setting the pace for PSC in the scorer's column was freshman forward Ryan Clemons (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) paced the Pioneers with a 21-point showing on 9-of-14 shooting from the field.  He also hauled down five rebounds and blocked a shot.
 
Sophomore forward Victor Brown (Rich Township H.S.)  delivered a team-high 20-points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor. The 6-foot-8 Brown also pulled down eight rebounds.
 
Freshman guard Xavier Sulaiman (Oak Lawn H.S.) turned in PSC's most well-rounded outing, posting 18 points while securing a double-double with 10 rebounds. He also made off with three steals and blocked a shot. 
 
Freshman guard Javery Johnson (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) added 15 points and five assists while freshman guard Darien Green (Christ the King H.S.) chipped in 14 more.
 
Johnson dished out five assists while Green hauled down nine rebounds.
 
After racing out to a 13-2 lead, thanks in part by a pair of field goals by Brown and two baskets plus a block from Sulaiman.
 
The Pioneers led 48-40 at the break and went on to outscore the Spartans 51-46 over the final 20 minutes as Elgin made a push at the end.

PSC will see action next on Thursday when it visits Skyway counterpart Morton for a 7:15 tipoff in Cicero.
