Talent-Laden Lineup Ready to Uphold Pioneer Soccer Standard

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. --- When your program plays in a region as tough as the NJCAA Region 4 and a league as competitive as the Illinois Skyway Conference, overcoming challenges is literally the name of the game.

And while the Prairie State men's soccer team was fully-prepared to hurdle its share of obstacles, it didn't count on any of those obstructions occurring before the season started.

Nevertheless, the overcoming of adversity in the 2026 campaign started earlier than expected.

When the EF-2 tornado which ripped through the Chicago Heights/Homewood areas on August 11 occurred, the PSC athletic complex took a major hit.

The Pioneers home field is currently not deemed playable and PSC is conducting its training sessions at a nearby park.

Head coach Carlos Reyes' team kicks off the new season Tuesday as it travels to Cicero for a road match against its fiercest Skyway rival, Morton  (4 p.m.).

The early-season matchup with the Panthers will test the Pioneers from the get-go and Reyes knows it.

"Tuesday we have our first test in Morton," Reyes said. "They'll be tough as they always are. They're well-coached and they have excellent players.

"The beginning of our season has not been easy.  However, I told the guys, we can make excuses or create results.  That all depends on us.  Our season goals have always been the same. Be one of the best teams in our region, compete for the conference championship, compete for the region title and the Midwest district championship, which would give us a ticket to go to the national tournament."

The Pioneers sport a roster featuring seven sophomores.

PSC will sport a strong offense anchored by second-year players Dylan Mitchell (Truro and Penwith College, ENGLAND) and Seydou Gori (Lycee Jacques Prevert H.S., FRANCE).

The Pioneers also will look to major contributions from first-year players Milhan Namoune (Marcelin Berthelot H.S., FRANCE), Guadalupe Valadez (Bradely-Bourbonnais H.S.), Emilio Guiza (Oak Forest H.S.) and Lucas Obsen (HF Vuc Fyn H.S., DENMARK).
